Definition?

Someone define "blog"/"web log" me, and explain how it differs from an online journal, and/or if they can overlap?

Motivation for this question.

Why is there sufficient interest in blogging as you defined it to create a hugely popular site? I'd say about 5% of my entries are just about web links..
