Someone define "blog"/"web log" me, and explain how it differs from an online journal, and/or if they can overlap?

Motivation for this question.

Blog == weblog == logging the web == generally made up of links & comments on the links.
online journal == journal == personal narratives.

Diarist.net has a great article on the diffeences but i can't find it. Nnngh.

Suffice it to say that LJ and blogger have blurred the already-blurry line.

Why is there sufficient interest in blogging as you defined it to create a hugely popular site? I'd say about 5% of my entries are just about web links..
