Part 1: Bottles flying into the air
Key characters: Bryan, Nick, Justin
Bystanders: Jen, Scott
Ingredients: A, B, C
Supplies: Empty 2L soda bottle, long dowel, matches or grill lighter (better)
This idea had been discussed between the above people earlier in the evening, deciding what to make blow up or similar. (Last night, apparently, they exploded 2L soda bottles with water and dry ice, but I missed that.) Bryan suggested bottle rockets (literally), and procured the ingredients.
Procedure: Plant stick in ground, pointing near vertical, away from houses/people. Pour a few oz. of A into bottle, add a few cc of B, swirl. Mixture will begin to bubble; when it's almost filled the bottle, cap it and shake a bit; uncap and pour out into spare container (later, dispose of in drain)--bottle is now largely full of oxidizer. Pour in a bit of C, shake, pour out--bottle now contains fuel and oxidizer. Quickly invert bottle over stick, and hold a lit match or grill lighter near the mouth. Foom! Bottle goes flying off. We did this successfully twice with a 2L; third time (Justin lit it), it foofed off, went about 10 feet, and the bottle had melted too much to use again. Then we tried a smaller bottle with similar results, and ran out of A.
Part 2: Exploding crystals
( Longish story and procedure herein )
If you're over 18, good with chemical safety, and are really curious about the ingredient list, contact me--I don't want to post it publicly, even though these recipes are readily available on the web. ;)
