I am one of that population, and while it kinda sucked that I couldn't post yesterday, I'm not exactly going to get snotty about it since I'm not paying anything!

True enough. :) I decided a while back that I used it more than enough to merit paying.. and some of the paid benefits are nice, downtime for free/paid notwithstanding. :)

I like it so far, so I guess it is cool to pay to support it, but I am a po' student...I really can't afford much right now! But yeah, it would be cool to have access to some of the directories I don't currently have access to. Are there other benefits to being a paid member?

Quite a few, in fact. :)

I usually scraped together $5 or $15 for 2 or 6 months, only this current season did I find $25 for a year.. :)
