The Cornell Society of Engineers sponsored a reception for the new Dean of Engineering, Kent Fuchs ("Fox"), at the Annapolis Grill in NW DC this evening. I decided to drive in, as it was cheaper and faster than taking the Metro; one inconvenient driver stopped in their lane with flasher on aside, the drive was easy and the MapQuest directions were sufficient to get me there. Circled the block once, parked a couple blocks away, no problem.

The men there (all men but one, who helped organize it) ranged from class of '48 (or earlier, one man appeared older but had no year on his nametag) to '01 (myself); the next youngest after myself was '97. Met Lt. Col. Jeff Loren '75, the host of the event, from whom I have a card and a suggested lead; Bob forget-his-last-name, the man who let me into the Zinck's Night and join the Cornell Club of Washington on my word that I'd mail a check, Charles Schilke (met at the end, have his business card and a couple suggestions of job leads), Kent Fuchs, and several men whose names I've forgotten. :)

Also present was Cliff Pollock (whom Phill should remember), from whom I took ELEE 210, and whose son was a) in the class and b) Phill's roommate soph year; and, apparently Herb Fontecilla was present at some point as well--the DC-area interviewer for many years, including mine, as well as a DC-area Cornellian liaison for several years, sending emails to all of us and such.

There was a wealth of finger foods on tables and roving on waitresses' trays, included in the registration fee; drinks were paid--had a good Wye River Wheat beer.

Talked of our respective fraternities with Bob (he was in Lambda Chi); talked of the potential dissolution of the Architecture, Art & Planning school, reassignment of various programs around Engineering and Arts, the economy vs. the job market and higher education, the stability of business education in any economy, origins of our interests in engineering, and various other subjects with Kent, Cliff, Charles, and various other attendees.. all in all a very interesting, intelectually stimulating night.

With minimal difficulty and only a few vague turns, found my way back to 66 and back home.

Currently, Matt, Steph, and Shauna are at the Tori concert at the Patriot Center, my mom's looking after Brendan until they get back, and then Shauna will go back to school. Lucky bastards.
