Friday Night at 7pm EDT, 6pm CDT, 5pm MDT, 4pm PDT (not EST, like the message originally said):

If you can (not in a wheelchair, not bedridden, not in rush-hour traffic), please step out of your door, please (again) stop your car, or please (one more time) step out of your establishment and light a candle. We will show the world that Americans are strong and united together against terrorism (or at the least can light a lot of candles simultaneously). Please pass this to everyone on your e-mail list (because chain mail always helps in situations like this). We need to reach everyone across the United States quickly (which won't happen if all the mail servers are bogged down).

The message: We Stand United (by virtue of all having lit candles at the same time) - We Will Not Tolerate Terrorism. (Or darkness--lots of candles help that. Might mess up spy satellites, if we get enough of them lit, or confuse would-be terrorists as they're surrounded by flames. The rest of the world, on the other hand, won't care one way or the other.)

Even if I'd intended to, I forgot. I haven't been to any of the vigils or convocations or prayers or anything.

I was not personally affected by this, and I'm having a hard time feeling any strong emotions about it. If anyone came to me for support, by all means they'd get it, but I don't see how my presence at a vigil would help anyone aside from seeing that one more person cared--but shit, there were 12,000 people at Cornell's latest vigil-thing.

And furthermore, I think that the best thing to do is move on. Not shut everything down, not take hiatuses, not let the terrorists see the effect they're obviously having. They wanted to shake things up, and they've succeeded.

I wish 90% of the country and 99.5% of Congress didn't want to go to war, though.
