Data storage goodness, plans, and links
Sep. 10th, 2004 07:29 pmMan, I play with expensive, high-capacity stuff at work. Spent the entire day (09-1730) at RackSpace0, helping Rob install a set of new tape drives1, SNCs2, and Scalar DLC3, as well as upgrade firmware on the SNCs (one at a time, 5min each), upgrade firmware on the drives (via a specialized tape routine, after climbing into the robot's area), and shuffle around many of the ~380 tapes in the library4 (also from inside the library.)
0) Gorgeous day out, too, and we were in a huge, chilly, windowless managed hosting center.
1) IBM LTO/2 tape drives, about 15 of them, $12K each. Capable of 40MB/sec transfer.
2) The drive controllers, 5 of them, probably $5K-$10K each.
3) Neither of us knew the cost, but it controls the robot's drive/tape partitioning, and looks expensive.
4) Native capacity 200GB, standard compression 400GB, capable of over 900GB under certain conditions. $100 each, for $38K of tapes, with bays for another 800 tapes.
Next week--and for the following four weeks--ADIC will be participating in the move of a large, walk-in tape library for NRL, at expense to NRL of almost $100K for the service.
Tonight, "Not a Party" at Christine's.
Tomorrow morning-through-afternoon, hiking Old Rag with Esther and the Cornell Club of Washington.
Tomorrow evening, Mike Hedrick's bday BBQ, also to be attended by Nathan and
beracjade! Woo!
Ooh, you can download the new song by Lazy Boy, titled "Underwear Go Inside The Pants," based on a Denis Leary rent, here. :D
Ha! How's this for a postcard from Florida?
