Got up late, to find that after about 23 hours, email was finally starting to trickle in--just as I was commenting to the then- (and still-) unresponsive tech support crew about the lack of email. (Over the course of the next few hours, it all caught up.) No further job emails, but I plan to email the guys I spoke with last week about any updates.
Around 7, we got a visit from a sales rep for a water-filtration company, the result of a sample tested a week or so ago. As was no surprise to me, our water has high levels of chlorine, lead, and assorted sediment. The rep--an attractive girl, as Nathan would've asked a guy to leave almost immediately--then proceeded to show us the benefits of treated, softened water: cleans and protects surfaces without soap--no, really, she cleaned spots of the tub, mirror, stove, grout, and carpet with just water--requires less soap for laundry and bathing, leaves skin feeling smoother, treats clothes better in the washer, tastes better, etc, not to mention the long-term financial savings due to reduced need for cleaners and water treatments and whatnot. Now, having spent the better part of 17 years in my parents' house with softened water, I already knew I liked it better, and don't like the taste, odor, or residue from the local water here. However, Nathan neither notices nor cares (nor, generally speaking, cleans) so I didn't expect him to be impressed or purchase such a system, and I was right. (However, I don't know that I'd be willing to spend the almost $7,000 it would cost to get their system installed, regardless of all those benefits.)
I then rode up to Rockville, where I tried to fix Esther's family's computer. They installed a new hard drive--40GB addition to the 8GB system--and it won't boot from that drive. I tried rebuilding the master boot record, recopying the system files, physically reordering connections and primary/secondary/master/slave settings, changing boot order, logging startup, but to no avail--it'll start perfectly off the old drive, but on the new drive it'll reboot itself immediately following the Win98 splash screen. (I called my dad around 11pm and asked for suggestions, but nothing he could think of worked either.) I think they'll just be backing up new stuff and reformatting/reinstalling on that drive. I did, however, succeed in getting rid of some crash-prone "download assistant" software and reconfiguring their network card, and I got a peach, some homemade cookies, and some saltwater taffy out of the deal, not to mention getting to see Esther for a few minutes, so it wasn't time lost. :) (And once she's done with her thesis later this month, we can actually hang out more.)
It didn't rain while I was out, but it was unpleasantly humid for the whole round-trip. :P
sebatical: Caption this! (Questions make Bush ANGRY!)
