So, I still don't have a phone card to refill my cell phone. See, when I got to the City Walk, I remembered that today (and tomorrow, I believe) featured a huge "Food and Dance Spectacular", merely a small part of the National Multicultural Festival, covering almost the entirety of the Walk. There were vendors (of food, mostly, but some crafts and clothes and whatnot as well) from every corner of the globe--90 countries--as well a two large performance stages (one at each end) and a smaller central stage dedicated to one group. Thus, I was there from a bit after 5pm until about 11:30, then ran into the St. Vinnie's van again, had coffee, donuts, and chatted with a grad student named Paula until a bit after midnight, then was drawn back to the closer stage to dance with the crowd for the performance there.
What performers did I watch and what foods did I sample, you might ask? If you did, I would tell you I had a Tonga drink featuring pineapple and watermelon, a Brazilian black bean & pork stew over rice called feijoda, and a Brazilian soda called Guaranå; I later had a Finnish donut called munkki and, well, an Australian beer, Toohey's Blue Bitter. :) (So I've now had Toohey's Old, New, and Blue.. if they came out with Toohey's Borrowed, I'd be all set for marriage! :D)
I saw Polish dancers, Chinese dancers, Filipino dancers, Tonga dancers, belly dancers, the Connies (a Melbourne group singing about trams), calypso music, folk music, tribal music, and others that will come back to me when I offload/upload the photos, as I took about 60. :D I also saw a great set of young circus performers, the Canberra Warehouse Circus--acrobatics, juggling, and other feats of skill, one of the most impressive performances all day--and decided that I really like the band Propellerheads, and want their album. :) (The group I went back to dance to was called Tribal Rhythms, incidentally. I took pictures, then my batteries went dead. :P)
So in short, it can be summed up as: great food, great performers, and way, way too many people for that area. Walking through the crowd meant shuffling slowly, leaving an area generally meant pushing through people to get to the narrow areas people had kind of left for walking by, unless someone stopped to fiddle with their cell phone for several minutes, for example.) Pictures will go up Sunday sometime, most likely. :)
But now, I'll change clothes and head to Insomnia, which should be packed if even a small percentage of the festival-goers stayed in the area. :)
