Work, presents receipt, lots o' links
Feb. 6th, 2004 07:17 pmWork was productive, and Carol made a very tasty spice cake. Woo! And in the taxi on the way home I got a call from Jillian, who then text messaged Oscar to get him to call me, so he could invite me out with them--first to Tilley's, then to a Retro night at icbm. Should be fun! (I would've called him myself, but I'm out of credit on the phone and haven't bought more.) But first, I should eat. And shave. :)
Also, the Christmas presents I mailed home last week arrived, to the following receptions so far:

(And his birthday is today, 2/6, for which I haven't bought anything yet--but hey, Christmas in February! And Shauna tells me my gifts are still sitting about the house unwrapped--and why not? :D
Apparently Melody's mom starting singing along with the stuffed kangaroo's "Waltzing Matilda", and her dad wasn't impressed by the realistic cockatoo screeches from the stuffed 'too. :D

BOSTON — Legislators opposed to gay marriage were coming up with ways Thursday to circumvent a Massachusetts court ruling that paves the way for same-sex marriages as early as May.
House Speaker Thomas Finneran, who opposes gay marriage, wants the high court to delay when its ruling takes effect until voters have considered a constitutional amendment defining marriage as a heterosexual union.

My favorite bit: when Judge Noonan calls Mr. Ramos on his use ofoverheated rhetoric--e.g., piracy talk:
"Let me say what I think your problem is. You can use these harsh terms, but you are dealing with something new, and the question is, does the statutory monopoly that Congress has given you reach out to that something new. And that's a very debatable question. You don't solve it by calling it 'theft.' You have to show why this court should extend a statutory monopoly to cover the new thing. That's your problem. Address that if you would. And curtail the use of abusive language."

"If the vice president is the source of generosity, it means Scalia is accepting a gift of some value from a litigant in a case before him," New York University law professor Stephen Gillers told the Times. "It is not just a trip with a litigant. It's a trip at the expense of the litigant. This is an easy case for stepping aside."
