Nathan's and my evening from 9pm on consisted of:
  • The West Wing, alternated with Angel during commercial breaks
  • South Park
  • Reno 911
  • A bit of Extreme Sports Challenge, an amusingly dubbed foreign show

Just fielded a call from Melody, too, to relay one of her course assignments off the web, since her internet connection is down--with cable modem behaving exactly as mine was for hours this evening, the Online light blinking slowly, mockingly.

And now sleep, as I was falling asleep during the last two shows.

Oh yeah--the reason we can actually do welding now, instead of waiting until we move to the new building, is that the move has been postponed again. Original date was in May, I believe, with the latest "definite" move on Oct 4-6. As such, the techs have been packing stuff up all week, and the welding tables had already been moved. Today, it was announced that the move was postponed--rumor has it that in addition to inspection issues, there are logistical issues with actually placing departments in the new building*--and the welding instructors and we students went over to fetch the [100-pound or so black steel] six welding tables.

    * See, it's this nice, rather large building, in which we would've had plenty of space. But since there was so much space, State Dept. decided that we couldn't possibly use all of it, and placed several other departments/companies/contractors/whatever in there, so we only get part of the first floor, none of the second floor, and may not even have enough space for the people we need to move in. Nice.

Today: Welded more! Welding is fun.
Also today: Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] reverend_dave!

Saturday: Cornell Club(s) hike on Old Rag Mountain, 36th annual. Getting picked up by Esther around 08 to be in Sperryville by 0930/45. I'll probably go pick up an inexpensive day pack with hip belt before then, too, as I discovered while hiking with [livejournal.com profile] macguyver that 9 miles of hilly terrain with a regular backpack, even a light one, wears heavily on the shoulders.

This looks like a good time, and since I'll have my motorcycle back in working order before Melody visits--a week before that event--I'll be good to go! Too bad she won't be here that weekend, I think she'd like it. :)

Earlier, I watched two or three episodes of Most eXtreme Elimination Challenge on SpikeTV (America's Network for Men) with Nathan, as he'd taped several. Most ridiculous show ever, very amusing. :) During that time, I ate a PB&J sandwich and a hot pocket, in addiiton to the can of soup I had around 6, and I'm still hungry. :P

I joined a reptile community, [livejournal.com profile] herpers, at [livejournal.com profile] typhanie's suggestion. Might as well--after all, I'm already a member of [livejournal.com profile] ferretlovers, [livejournal.com profile] pscittacines, [livejournal.com profile] catsgalore, and [livejournal.com profile] tarantulalovers, not to mention four pet-related photo comms. :)

I need to figure out how to tell ZoneAlarm to allow connections to my FTP server, without explicitly allowing each authorized user/computer who might want in. :P

In the following excerpt, "the girl" is Angie, the one girl in the current 6-person class at work, of the five from PTI, who crashed here for the night of the hurricane, and with whom I've been working for about six weeks:

[00:18] CU Stryker: today, the girl wouldn't spot me $10 for an office party tomorrow, despite having an entire envelope full of cash and being willing to do so for another classmate, because "she doesn't know me as well as them"
    [00:18] Miss Pedant: Weird.
[00:18] Miss Pedant: Way to build teamwork.
[00:18] CU Stryker: yeah, she's quite the team player
[00:19] Miss Pedant: Sorry about the anti-Scotts.
[00:19] CU Stryker: this is the same girl who refused to wire in a logical, efficient fashion*, and told the instructor to shut up.**
    [00:19] Miss Pedant: *eh*
    [00:19] Miss Pedant: *eh*
    [00:19] Miss Pedant: Bad idea.

    * with an attitude of "what does it matter? this will work!" vs. the direct advice of myself and the instructor
** this is an instructor who dishes it out and can take it, but that was crossing the line
