I knew work was off to a good start when traffic was backed up on the parkway north, and when I got to 66W, it was so slow that I and several others never left the entrance/exit lane, but instead just looped on back to Parkway South to find another route. Braddock west was decent, but I still got to work half an hour late--I didn't call in, I figured they'd know from all the other afternoons I've called in late, I was right. :P (I don't understand people who consistently drive several miles per hour -below- the speed limit, for several miles, on a clear day with clear roads. :P)

Work was insanely busy, and for some crack-addled reason, they only scheduled me and Ross for the afternoon/evening/closing. Thus, whenever one of us was away from the department, the other was swamped--at one point, I had at least five people waiting for my assistance with Ross nowhere to be found. (As it turns out, he was on his break, which ran longer than intended because his insurance wouldn't renew his blood pressures meds one day early, and he's leaving for his vacation tomorrow, so things went slowly.) These facts combined meant that I didn't get to take my 6pm break until after 8.

Also while at work, during a brief (2-minute) respite, I paged Ross to see if I could go on break, and Michelle (the only other manager on) answered with a "Ross is on break--come on back and I'll give you a couple soda cards to get some chips and a soda." She also gave me a few cards for some other employees via Jessica (the cashier), and was told to pass on a message that there was a group of Scary People with a "sharpei in therapy" (read: violent and not well-trained) who needed a pinch collar. They'd selected one, and Michelle suggested they might try to leave without paying for it--they often bring in returns, but not too many purchases, and are overall white-trash-sketchy. (I was also charged with passing a few soda cards (for good service) to Jessica for herself and some other associates, plus two for me A bit later, I was fetching a gerbil for a girl, and the first one they wanted was vicious, chomped my finger--a gerbil! gerbils don't bite! At least, I'd never been bitten by one. I called him a "fucker!", tossed him back in, and went to sanitize and band-aid myself before helping further, tossing the habitat keys on the counter as I walked off (and mentioning that I'd be back in a minute.)

When I got back, the mother berated me for something or other--I thought it was for swearing in front of her daughter, so I i offered a "Sorry." and proceeded to be my regular good customer servant and get them a different gerbil who was as nice as usual. Much later, Michelle explained that this woman had complained to her that I'd "thrown the keys at her daughter", which we both agreed was ridiculous--there's no way tossing them on the counter, no harder than usual, could be interpreted that way. (This is the same family who was telling their kids that they were going to get a "fucking beating" when they got home, for whatever reason.) :P :P

After we closed it was fine--still understaffed (two cashiers, one stocker, one specialty, two managers)--but much more tolerable than "crazy busy." Of course, the cashier that left early neglected to put away one of the adoptable cats, and didn't lock up any of the cages. Fortunately, the cat to be retrieved was very good-tempered, just played an immobile lump very well.

Tomorrow, I work 8-4 on my modified schedule, then head out to Broad Run--preferably by motorcycle, weather-permitting, but by truck otherwise--for Bill Ryerson's 6th Annual Seal & Serpent Picnic, which officially starts at 3. I've had to miss it every other year, due to a) not being in Seal yet, or b) not being in the NoVA area over the summer, so I'm pleased to be getting to go this year. :)

(And now I've been on the phone with Melody for over an hour--she's at a friend's place for the night, not online, and into her cell's "free minutes" period. :D)

Also, Cox has been sucking today--keeps dropping the connection, which means my computer takes a minute to renew its IP address even if it regains the connection immediately. Otherwise it might take five or ten minutes, and a modem power-cycle doesn't help. Grrr.

Today was a good day.

First, I found the post office I couldn't find the other day, which was in fact highly visible in all respects except one--no significant sign, except a small USPS eagle sign inside one of the archways. Mailed a loan payment.

Second, was late to work, but this is neither here nor there. Arrived a bit before 0830, sent Christina on her way--she'd come in because she wasn't sure if I'd run the hour-swap by Susan, which I had, so she went to a diner and/or home until 1100. Work was a breeze compared to yesterday, and the cockatoo-purchasers stopped by to hang out with the bird--utterly adorable, cuddling and even falling asleep on her chest--and get more information on perches and toys, which I happily gave.

At 1600, I got off work, changed out of my work shirt at my truck, and then located the paycheck I'd been handed as I walked in--checked several places before logically deducing that it was probably by the habitats where I'd encountered Christina, and it was. Changed into shorts and sandals in my truck and then, as it was raining a bit, opted to stay in the truck rather than trading for the motorcycle at my parents' house, for the trip out to [Ambassador and Mrs. William] Bill Ryerson's house for the Sixth Annual Seal and Serpent Picnic. (I pledged Seal in Fall '99 and was in Ithaca for Summers '99-'02, so that meant missing 1st-5th Annual.)

Naturally, the sun came out as soon as I was a few miles west on 66, and by the time I got to his house in Broad Run--at the end of several miles of winding, hilly, 25mph roads, I was really wishing I'd gone for the motorcycle. As I got near Bill's house, I started to get an inkling of what sort of estate he lived on--the houses and properties were getting larger and more valuable. His house... yeah. 2-level, 6600sf, on 11 acres of rolling green terrain with a pond off in the trees somewhere. Gorgeous view, amazing house--and I'm told he did the finishing or remodeling of the lower level himself. Present were John Cardone '85, Mike Hedrick '00 (recently unemployed) and his girlfriend (lawyer), Jeff Goldberg '99 (recent DDS, now in Baltimore), Gligor Tashkovich '87, and assorted other people I didn't know and whose names I didn't catch or don't remember. :)

The food was fabulous--including a mud pie of cookie crust, coffee ice cream, fudge, and frozen whipped cream topping that was to die for--the company was excellent, the house and property were amazing, and the German Shepherd was big and playful.

We all parted ways a bit after 1900, back to Lorton went I, stopping by the SunTrust bank near my house, where I realized that my paycheck included an unexpected $140 in Vacation Pay, which was a very nice surprise.

Now home, invited by Megan to join a group seeing Pirates (again! for most of them/us) at Ballston Common Mall at 2220 (~90min from now, ~30min from here), undecided.

As I've seen Pirates already and Nathan just called to suggest we go see American Wedding after he gets home from work--yes, that's where he just left--I shall do that instead, even though Pirates was absolutely fabulous. (8.0)

At the other extreme, after noting [livejournal.com profile] baranoouji's Gigli (2.1)/Ishtar (3.7) comparison, I discovered that there's a new movie that has overtaken Manos: The Hands of Fate (1.6) as #1 on IMDb's Bottom 100! From Justin to Kelly (1.4), "Two unfortunate American Idols, Kelly and Justin, meet during spring break and joyfully fall in love whilst having a fantastic time!" Goodness. (Comments from the people who like it think that most of the voters haven't actually seen it, and that the #1 ranking won't stand the test of time. I don't know.. ;P)

Scratch that, we're seeing T3 instead, because a) it's big and exciting and needs to be seen on the silver screen, and b) American Wedding will be entertaining but could be seen as well on a TV. (Basically, Nathan just wants to see a movie, even if rented--Daredevil would be an option--and I'm ok with that. :)

This link from Melody is entirely unrelated to movies: Dreambook for DESCRIBE EFFECTIVE METHODS TO PREVENT CHILDREN MASTURBATING. It's a guestbook sort of thing, and thoroughly ridiculous. How will we save our prostates?! ;D
