Monday Mission
Nov. 4th, 2002 01:30 pm1. Have you ever had to appear in court? What was the reason? How did it turn out?
Yes, for a speeding ticket (47 in a 30, Triphammer Rd in Ithaca--many many people get ticketed for speeding there). I opted to show up in court and chat with the judge rather than just await the fine in the mail; as I'd never had a speeding ticket in NY before, and only one previous--which I mentioned to him, though he didn't know about it--I got the minimum fine, which is $60 plus the state-mandated $30 court fee, in that area.
2. Ever been accused of something you never did? Were you able to convince anyone?
Yes; yes. If I remember what it was, I'll update. (Notice how I often say that, and never update it?)
3. When it comes to crime and punishment, do you agree with the saying "An eye for an eye?"
Makes the world go blind, generally. However, I've been drawn to the idea at times--like the death penalty for this recent sniper. I take it case by case, really.
4. Are you a judgemental person? Do you ever make up your mind about a person before you know them? When was the last time that happened? Or if not, how do you keep from being judgemental?
I try not to be--I generally do my best to keep an open mind, reserve judgment for later, with mixed results. Sometimes I'll quickly judge but not act, while I take in more information about the person to reform my judgment.
5. When I was in 6th grade I lit a match in class accidentally and was given the choice of having my folks called or getting 10 "swats." I took swats and damn, that wooden paddle with the holes drilled in it hurt like hell (not to mention the horible whistling sound it made before impact). I don't think they allow "swats" anymore. Ever get "swats" at school? How do you feel about children being spanked in school. Is it best that they don't do that anymore? How about parents spanking kids? Good or bad?
Nope, corporal punishment wasn't, and isn't, legal in Virginia when I was in grade school. I don't approve of it at school, or at home--all it accomplishes is sullen children who are more prone to violence later in life. There are plenty of other effective punishments that don't involve violence, which would beget further violence.
6. What is your favorite "Chick Flick?"
Damned if I know. Ones with happy endings. Princess Bride, got something for everyone.. thus not purely a chick flick, but it should qualify. :)
7. Describe the last situation you were in that can best be summed up by the phrase "seemed like a good idea at the time?"
That would imply regrets, which I try to avoid.. I don't remember a specific instance recently. May update later (not really).
BONUS: Who will bury us when we die?
The Undertaker will bury you!!

Watching the new movie adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie tonight (NBC, 8-11pm EST); hopefully, it'll be much better than the original movie (1976, Brian DePalma; Sissy Spacek, John Travolta, others) which I felt left out huge, critical parts of the plot, (having read the book first.)
Pray for the Godless!

Goood movie.
Nov. 4th, 2002 11:04 pmThe new Carrie far surpasses the original in a) quality of cinematography, b) quality of acting, and c) holding true to the book. If you like King, liked Carrie, and/or like movie adaptations of his books, you should see this one. I was pretty riveted to the screen for the whole three hours, minus commercials.
Note, though, that it doesn't end quite like the book. Even so, good good good. :)
Also, I've had this song in my head since before the movie. It's good, 'cause well, everything I have by the group's quite good. Come to think of it, I like 'Something I Don't Know' even better. And 'Picture' is good too.
