Wow, what a night..
Dec. 6th, 2001 12:45 amStart, 6pm. Katia told me earlier to get dressed nice, implying that we're going out to dinner. Leave, head for Dryden Rd.
I'm right in my guess, we're going to Antlers--really nice place, been there before.
6:18pm: Arrive at Antlers, signal turn, start turning into Antlers' second parking lot, get slammed into by a little red Honda Prelude--his right front corner, my rear left (I was turned 30-45 degrees right, half way out of the lane.
Next: Get out, somewhat shaken but entirely unhurt, discover that I've only suffered a bent bumper, some bent sheet metal, and a damaged tire/rim that's losing air. He's lost his entire front plastic bumper, headlight, lots of trim, glass and plastic scattered across the road, that corner's basically trashed. He gets out a couple minutes later (on crutches!--I kinda felt bad, but it was his fault, he wasn't paying attention.)
Next hour: My truck is basically fine and his car can drive sufficient to back up and turn into the parking lot, but he'll need a tow. Antlers staff heard the noise and come out, make sure everyone's fine (yup) and call for police. Upon inspection, his front end basically rode under my bumper, trashing his front-right corner and hood, while only causing superficial and wheel/tire damage to my truck--damn! I drive a tank! *grin*. I collected his bumper and some other trim parts out of the road and carried them up to his car while we waited, and he went into call his insurance agent. (He offered to settle in cash before he did so, so his insurance co. didn't get notified (and premiums boosted, among following reasons) but since the cops were already on the way, that was a moot point.
Cop shows up, looks at the cars, takes reports, guy and I trade information. Guy's in a small amount of trouble because a) while he renewed his insurance recently (last Friday), he has no card on him; and, his registration recently lapsed. He may have gotten ticketed for that, I'm not sure. He calls a friend at a towing company, and goes inside. Meanwhile, I change the tire (leaking due to bent rim, couldn't be driven) to the spare, using my tiny bottle jack--damn, but I need a real jack for that thing, major ground clearance!--on top of a cinderblock I found next to the building. I also had to get some help from the cop to break the lugnuts free, as they were damn tight and I didn't have the length of pipe I usually carry in the truck for leverage. (And then, letting the truck down, I had to put a brick under the wheel so that the jack could be dropped and removed, due to the smaller size of the spare!) Checked the pressure of the spare at 12psi, supposed to be 60, more on that later.
That done, at 7:30, we went in for dinner.
Dinner was delectable--appetizer of stuffed shrimp, dinners of top sirloin for me and salmon for her, with a bottle of Lindemans Bin 65 Chardonnay (Australia) to share.. very tasty all!
Before we left, we asked a manager about an exterior outlet for the mini-compressor I had in the truck to reinflate the tire, and he followed me out and unplugged part of the exterior xmas lights to get an extension cord. Shortly thereafter, I discovered it only needed the cigarette lighter outlet (makes sense :), but hey, I'd never had to use it. Hooked it up, turned it on, and waited.. at about 40psi, it broke--drastically changed sound, no longer spewed air--so we called it good and went on our way.
We then went down to Madeline's on the Commons for drinks and dessert.. they have an incredible dessert case and an extensive set of drinks.. we each had a fabulous dessert and a tasty cocktail (or two, for her). During this time (9:50-10:10, in particular), I called home since my parents go to bed around 10.. talked to Shauna about her rejection from Oberlin and their apparent shift to an operatic focus, then my parents about the accident and how the scanner arrived damp (I think I mentioned that, not sure).
After that, it being so damn nice out (55-60 degrees! December 5th!), we walked around the commons and down past the State Theater--recently reopened, and a fantastic classical theatre--I need to take picture of the place itself, it's gorgeous. (We decided we have to see the Nutcracker at the State Theater, and A Christmas Carol at the Firehouse Theatre.) Looked in all the shops and the SPCA center, and eventually wandered back to the truck and came home.. soon, watching a movie, I think. With tasty beer. :)
Later: Repackage boots for FedEx pickup. Call Visioneer to complain about damp scanner. Call Geico to report accident. Finish prelab for Thursday afternoon. Other stuff, I'm sure. :)
But you know what? Overall, it was a good day. :)
