Drove out to Manassas for
gothiccripple's birthday party, and had a good time. Most of the food and drink was provided by the guests, except for the delectable meatballs they make for every party; I brought sour mix (as requested) and a bottle of egg nog (the 30-proof version you can get at the liquor store); one girl brought a very tasty pumpkin bread; one guy brought an awesome "Christmas bread" that amounted to a soft, rich, chocolate fruitcake, which was awesome.
Most of the people were there from 2100-2300, at which point it looked like the party was dying down, but an infusion of new people occurred by midnight or so, and all was well. By 0300 or 0400 it was down to four again--Doug, Tenoya,
slyx, and me; we talked for a while more, and then they discovered that I'd never seen Big Trouble in Little China (John Carpenter) or Re-Animator (H.P. Lovecraft), and three of us (minus Doug) set out to watch the former. Alas, Tenoya fell asleep immediately, and I followed suit within about 20 minutes. When the movie ended, Slyx and I headed our merry ways, and I went home to sleep.
Tonight, company Christmas party! (This means that I actually get to meet most of the rest of my local coworkers!)
On sniffing dogs and gun control, courtesy of
kitiara:
SCOTUS rules that a dog sniff at a traffic stop does not violate Fourth Amendment rights; the MD Court of Appeals rules that a dog sniff of an apartment is not a search. This is somewhat troubling, for reasons discussed here.
Oh no! "In 35 states, practically any non-felon can obtain a license to carry a concealed weapon." And think about this! "Do you want your mail guy or delivery guy carrying a loaded gun when he comes to the door?" asks Patty Sullivan, a Pizza Hut spokeswoman. "What if he's not happy with his tip?" Because, you know, they're already coming to the door brandishing tire irons. (Discussion and summation in Kit's journal, here: "Some fear that my 60-year-old carbine would turn me into a maniacal killer. Psychiatrists call that "projection.")
One of last night's dreams involved being chased, on a motorcycle, by a car, down a relatively short, very winding road. Each turn of the road had a sign posted indicating the best line to take through it, and I was discussing (with a friend) the best method by which to incude the chase car to go off the road while I got away. Probably the best plan of action, since the road was a dead-end. Symbolism much?
I had another dream involving marine animal presentations, including some large marine mammals near a dock with a visiting public, and a skeleton (such that the joints could still move) of some sort of reptile, two or three feet long, mounted to a board, that I was showing to a small group of people uphill from the dock.
