Date: 2004-08-27 12:37 pm (UTC)Plus, it isn't *Bush* picking the fight, it's a bunch of people who have been really pissed at some of the things Kerry said about the soldiers in Vietnam, and think that it is wrong that Kerry should come out of this smelling like a rose, being able to extort Vietnam for his own benefit time and time again, when "I'm a hero" is not (according to them) the plain truth.
So between Bush and Kerry, it's Kerry who picked this fight - and if anyone who supports moveon.org or Fahrenheit 9/11 thinks they have some sort of moral high ground over the people who support these ads, it's laughable.

Google for "My Lai 4" sometime. There were atrocities committed, by American soldiers. This is not in question. Nor is calling attention to those atrocities grounds for an enormous smear campaign.
The difference between the Swift Boat Liars and MoveOn or Fahrenheit 9/11 is twofold. First, the SBLs are one of them "shadowy 527s." Neither Michael Moore nor MoveOn are 527s: Moore is an individual, and MoveOn is a PAC with strict funding laws and financing disclosure requirements [example: individuals can only give $5,000 to a given PAC in a year; compare to the $100,000 given to the Swift Boat Liars by the Texan whose name escapes me at the moment]. Second, nothing in Fahrenheit is false [if you think otherwise, you should let Mr Moore know: I believe he's offered a substantial sum of money to anyone who finds factual discrepancies in the movie], and at the very least MoveOn's latest ad [questioning Bush's Nat'l Guard service] is entirely factual. On the other hand, one could politely refer to the SBLs' claims as "unsubstantiated."
