And, of course, Mark Morford: Sentient Non-Idiots For Kerry
Repubs pick a fight about Vietnam while Bush ruins America right now? Is the nation drunk?

Your quote is slightly misleading, because it was Kerry who made his war record cornerstone to his campaign. Who is he, then, to say that it shouldn't come under scrutiny?

Plus, it isn't *Bush* picking the fight, it's a bunch of people who have been really pissed at some of the things Kerry said about the soldiers in Vietnam, and think that it is wrong that Kerry should come out of this smelling like a rose, being able to extort Vietnam for his own benefit time and time again, when "I'm a hero" is not (according to them) the plain truth.

So between Bush and Kerry, it's Kerry who picked this fight - and if anyone who supports moveon.org or Fahrenheit 9/11 thinks they have some sort of moral high ground over the people who support these ads, it's laughable.

Short answer: I just relayed the header of the article, so I take no blame for it being any more or less misleading than the rest of the article. And Morford, well, is a hyperbolizing hothead. I view him more as "amusement that, generally speaking, I can relate to" than "objective truth."

However, from what I've heard, "According to them" holds very little water, given the records have apparently supported Kerry and not his detractors in the matter.

Man, I've been doing this a lot lately.

Some initial Swift Boat Liar debunkery here. More detailed Swift Boat Liar debunkery in the comments here [in the thread started by [livejournal.com profile] mycroftca, though the discussion hasn't involved him at all].

a bunch of people who have been really pissed at some of the things Kerry said about the soldiers in Vietnam

Google for "My Lai 4" sometime. There were atrocities committed, by American soldiers. This is not in question. Nor is calling attention to those atrocities grounds for an enormous smear campaign.

The difference between the Swift Boat Liars and MoveOn or Fahrenheit 9/11 is twofold. First, the SBLs are one of them "shadowy 527s." Neither Michael Moore nor MoveOn are 527s: Moore is an individual, and MoveOn is a PAC with strict funding laws and financing disclosure requirements [example: individuals can only give $5,000 to a given PAC in a year; compare to the $100,000 given to the Swift Boat Liars by the Texan whose name escapes me at the moment]. Second, nothing in Fahrenheit is false [if you think otherwise, you should let Mr Moore know: I believe he's offered a substantial sum of money to anyone who finds factual discrepancies in the movie], and at the very least MoveOn's latest ad [questioning Bush's Nat'l Guard service] is entirely factual. On the other hand, one could politely refer to the SBLs' claims as "unsubstantiated."
