a) Nathan says he was out his office door within 30 seconds of checking his voice mail. He also says he tried to call me more than once in the 9 o'clock hour to inform me of a cleaned-up-dog-pee spot on the carpet, but I never heard a ring.
b) It is, in fact, almost impossible to get ahold of him by office phone, intentionally, particularly internally.
c) This is not the first time a pipe has failed, resulting in flooding and carpet damage. However, last time it was the main out back in the water closet, and the water managed to make it up through the deck and into the house anyway. (That time, Nathan was at rehearsal, and the neighbor called the water company rather than brave the dog in strange circumstances.)
d) Fortunately, his homeowner's insurance should cover most of the damage--carpet, plumbing, and kitchen ceiling, possibly stove and ceiling fan.
e) Also fortunately, I think all of my cookbooks are salvageable--I leafed through them all to unstick the wet pages, and put them out in the sun.
f) Had either of us actually put the new roll of paper towels in the holder, they'd be soaked. However, a foot away on the counter, bone dry.
g) The pipe/fitting must have broken within a few minutes after Nathan left this morning--late, shortly after 9, after dealing with dog pee on the carpet--the carpet that will now likely be replaced. On the one hand, it was wasted effort to clean the carpet; on the other hand, if he'd stayed a bit later, perhaps another half-hour, he would've been home to shut off the water immediately.

Heh.

Hey, at least we don't have a basement or downstairs neighbor, and we're pretty sure the water was contained in our house. :)

His homeowner's insurance will cover everything but the plumbing, and the pipe repair itself shouldn't be too pricey. The plumbing should also get taken care of, oh, sometime today--good thing, because the house water can't be turned back on with a broken pipe--and the carpet, oh, soon. I think I'll go take a shower at Christine's. :)

Thanks for the offer, but I think we'll be okay. His homeowner's insurance will cover everything but the plumbing, and the pipe repair itself shouldn't be too pricey. Umm, you said this happened earlier...I was just wondering if he put in a claim to State Farm before? Because State farm will most likely drop him. They do that to anyone who has two claims, I think, or is it three....I dunno. They drop people a lot, is all I'm sayin, and it would suck for him to lose his coverage.

True, but if it came down to finding new coverage or paying for these repairs himself, I'm sure he'd rather find new coverage.

I wonder what my parents had, when they got dropped after three claims in a couple years' time--two stolen bicycles and hail damage--after 17 years or more of faithful coverage.
