So, last night's festivities started at Cafe Asia in NW DC (near 18th and I), for a PartySlave- & TBS-sponsored Bond party, which ostensibly had a "Strict dress code", was "All VIP", and offered free drinks to girls dressed as Bond girls.
I mentioned the party to Phill a couple days ago, and he and his roommate Lara drove up from Norfolk to join me, lookin' snazzy. (And me, I looked sharp, you better believe it. Black tux, silver vest. Mm.) Nathan loaned us his car, which was a nice surprise, and meant we didn't have to stuff ourselves into Phill's Durango or my Bronco II. On the way north, we discovered Flounder's Mashups on DC101, which included some truly excellent mixes.
Unfortunately, none of the ostensibles in the first paragraph, above, were true. Yes, there was a guest list, which we were on, and it got us in free (before 11pm), but a) really, anyone could come, b) the majority of the attendees had made no attempt to Bond themselves up at all, c) there was no Bond-themed decoration and no Bond-themed music, and d) there were no free drinks for any girls. It wasn't a bad party, it just didn't live up to its billing. I did run into one person I knew--Amy, whom I met at a CCW event a while back--but she and her friends left by 2330, and we weren't far behind. However, we didn't feel like heading home, so we started walking toward Georgetown. (Now, keep in mind that we were near 18th and I, and Gtown is closer to, say, 31st and M.) Unfortunately, we had to turn around after a few blocks so Phill could close out his tab, but the rest of the walk was uneventful--except for the entertaining kilted black Scotsman outside of one bar, which we intended to return to but never did.
For food--Phill and Lara hadn't eaten--we ended up at Bistro Francais. (We would've gone to Johnny Rockets, but Lara is a "kosher pescitarian"--keeps kosher except for shellfish, she says.) BF is a very nice little place, a little pricey but not outrageous, and is open until 03! We ordered at 0055, just under the wire for their "early bird special." Appetizers of carrot and ginger soup (L, very tasty), pate (P, tasty), and gazpacho (me, not as tasty); dinner of swordfish (L, and references were made to the cheesecake from the Matrix), shellfish assortment (P, very tasty), and rabbit stew (me--but they didn't mention they were out until they delivered the other two meals; however, when I ordered the tuna steak instead, it was out within minutes. Impressive!) Including a bottle of 2004 Beaujolais Nouveau, the bill for the three of us was just under $100, $120 with tip. Not too shabby, and we'd go there again. :)
Walked aaaall the way back tomy Nathan's car by about 0245--the garage closed at 03--and drove back to my place, where we all crashed for the night. (Well, I caught up on the emails that made their way in--from Cornell's server, since I verified that my mail host was working fine--before crashing around 0430. :) I gave up my bed to Lara and took the couch downstairs; Phill grabbed a piece of floor. :) Then they were up and out before 9, and I caught some more sleep until 1130 or so.
Overall, a great night, pretty much entirely due to excellent company. :D
