I was talking with Katia about banned books, and went looking for references on such.. came upon
this page, read a good number of the accounts, and have reaffirmed my opinion that no book should be banned. If you don't want to read it, don't read it; if you don't want your children reading it, don't let them read it. But don't
dare try to prevent everyone else from reading it because you personally find it offensive.
On a related note, Katia was telling me about an Anthropology writing seminar she took titled "Rebels and Revolutionaries", wherein the lecturer came in the first day and told her 40 students, "Go to Campus Store and look through the book list. If anything on it offends you, please drop this course--I don't want to deal with you." The final course enrollment was 12. (This lecturer also said she had gotten calls from
parents of college students complaining that her choice of books were unsuitable for young people and had obscenity and blah blah blah...)
Conclusion: People are lame, and need to stop trying to impose their beliefs upon others.
