there's a free trial of macdrive available at http://download.mediafour.com/macdrive/md_6.0.4.0_enu_qtd_setup.exe
I think it's fully functional, but will stop working after 5 days.

I'm assuming you'd already pulled the hard drive to try to get it to work on other machines. If so, what you'd need to do is install macdrive on a desktop PC, connect the hard drive to the pc using a laptop adapter, like found here: http://www.cablestogo.com/product.asp?cat%5Fid=906&sku=17705
If the drive's still functional at all, and the adapter's hooked up correctly, the PC should mount the drive using the macdrive software and hopefully you can snag your files.

Of course, I can't guarantee it'd work, but it's probably worth a shot since it's a hell of a lot cheaper than data recovery.

If you've got the drive pulled from the system, you should be able to send it to us without voiding your warranty. If not, there's a possibility, since for some models, it requires essentially disassembling the entire computer.
