Throes & VB @ Jammin' Java || Hurricane links
After calling Jammin' Java to verify that a) they take plastic--I didn't want to go out of my way for an ATM, and b) that tickets were still available, I drove up, arriving right around 20. There was a large crowd waiting in the front quarter of the place, some of whom were on the phone-ahead reservation list, some of whom thought they were on the guest list (which had to be pared down by the band(s) ahead of time, rather to the dismay of some of the folks.) While waiting to get to the ticket seller, the reservation-list guy came around, and asked if I wanted to buy a ticket on the spot, so I hit the ATM and did so. Simple, if arbitrary!
Then, I went to the counter and ordered a cappuccino smoothie from the guy and paid, after which the [cute] girl suggested I change to a frappe instead--more like a frappuccino, less like an iced coffee--so I did. I then fished out my change and left a tip, because that was above and beyond. :)
While waiting to get past the ticket-checker (well, hand-stamp-checker), who should I see wandering by but Stephanie (my older sister) who almost didn't notice me standing there. I then headed up toward the stage and joined Ron, one of Matt's coworker, and was later joined by Steph, and Matt when he arrived.
First up was The Throes, a local band who had been absent from the scene for several years. They were all right, but nothing special. Decent rock. The Violet Burning, on the other hand, out-and-out rocked. Great music, great stage presence by all members, entertaining commentary frequently mid-set, and a solo closing set by Michael Pritzl (lead guitar/vocals, and the man who is Gravity Show.) If you're in Pittsburgh (9/15), Louisville (9/17), or Chicago/Aurora (9/18), check 'em out--you won't regret it!
After the set, I checked out their merch, and couldn't pass up the $25 hoodie. That was, incidentally, all the cash I had left on me, but that's okay. They also only had mediums, and I need a large, so they'll be shipping me one within the week--rather than me having to go the website and pay shipping. Awesome!
And then, I joined Steph and Matt at Amphora, where we had late-night breakfast (and eavesdropped on some übernerds across the room) before going our separate ways.
Perhaps I should go to sleep now, since it's 0215, and I have to be at NRL at 09, meaning wake time around 07.
