Last day at work, travel plans, Red Gecko,
Last day at work was quite nice--got up around noon, boxed up books and such for mailing, had leftover pizza, took a cab to work. At work I learned that the travel guy back at the office hadn't responded to Ron's flight-change email, so I got to accept AmEx's ticketing:
Canberra to Sydney: Wed 1200 - Wed 1250
Sydney to San Fransisco: Wed 1515 - Wed 0935
San Francisco to Washington: Thu 1130 - 1924
Two cool things about this: First and foremost, San Francisco involves lots of hanging out with
preciouslaura :D and, assuming it get arranged, some
cacherylga as well. :) Second, I get to fly business class--for the first time ever!--for less than it would cost to fly economy! That's what market competition will do, I suppose. (Of course, it would cost about half as much to fly with 7-day advance notice, and a special round-trip price is less than that!)
While at the embassy, I said my goodbyes to various employees, got a whole bag of chocolate chip cookies--and some Snickerdoodles, which I sneakily foisted onto Jillian (who decried the name, but has been swayed by their tastiness), gave out my email and photo gallery email addresses to a few people, showed my bike to the APO mailroom woman (Julianne, I think) who may be interested in buying it, and eventually called cab to get both my bike and my 30-pound tool case back to the hotel. (I also learned that the cab (with wheelchair lift) had previously been unable to hoist a 150kg man and his 150kg electric wheelchair up. :)
Once home I was called and eventually visited by Jillian, then joined by Mitchell, Brooke, and Oscar, and we went to dinner at the Red Gecko. There, I finally had the Coat of Arms, which features: kangaroo steak, emu steak, boysenberries, and carmelized pear wrapped in prosciutto--served on a sheet of paper bark on the plate. Quite good, and also the most expensive item on the menu. Along with an appetizer of garlic bread and a glass of cabernet merlot, it was quite a tasty dinner. :)
Afterwards we walked back to my hotel, stopping along the way at a grocery store for a box of port and a few select candy bars. Now I have just Jillian and Mitchell left, and the evening's going well. :)
