Pre-Australia Day fun

Ended up leaving for the show around 7, blanket/chairs/picnic in bags. Jillian, Oscar, Kit and I biked over to the lawn between the old and new Parliament buildings, found it to be rather full of people, packed a few hundred metres from the stage, and sat a bit further back in full view of a large screen and speakers. We broke out the food--rolls, Melba toast, whole-grain mustard, ham, lemon pepper tuna, tomato & onion tuna, mushroom paté, Cracker Barrel cheese, and a jug of lemon cordial--and had a tasty dinner, then watched/listened to the show. The local MC was terrible--Ryan Seacrest (of American Idol) has more charisma and knows when to shut up--and the acts, well.. hip-hop, jazz, ballads, and cheesy pop may do it for some of the 30,000 assembled people and the Australians watching from around the country, but it just gave us non-stop fodder for making fun of it all. (Guy Sebastian--winner of the first Australian Idol--was a featured guest.) The highlight of the evening was a musical comedy trip called Tripod, who sang a love song that kept ending up with all the characters dead. We then decided to leave, as it wasn't going to get any better.
Back at Latebra, we considered playing Hearts, but Kit wasn't in, and three people does not a Hearts hand make. Instead, we watched Zoolander, which I'd never seen, and it was pretty funny.
Shortly before we all left for the show, it was raining. It stopped before we left. Shortly before Zoolander ended, it started thundering, lightning, and pouring down rain. I waited that out, borrowed a proffered waterproof coat from Oscar, and biked home in a light sprinkle. Shortly after I got home, the rain picked up in a torrential downpour, and there was a lightning strike within a kilometre of here. All in all, I've been avoiding the nasty weather quite neatly. :)
Got an SMS from Damon, work at 9 tomorrow (Australia Day! A shame, maybe it'll be a short day so I can partake of some AD entertainment) instead of the usual 8, which is nice. :)
In prescient recognition of current events, as this was drawn a couple years ago: What American needs now are more manned flights to the moon.
